Students for Disability Awareness

SDA Members,

Welcome back!  It’s time to get back into the swing of school.  I hope you had a great first week of classes!  Students for Disability Awareness (SDA) has been working throughout the summer to prepare for a successful school year with many programs and activities.  SDA is a student led club under the Associated Students that represents the views of Western students with disabilities and educates the WWU community on disabilities issues.

Over the summer, SDA was successful in getting more funding allocated to the disAbility Resources for Students office with the support of many of you and the AS Board of Directors.  We are currently working on a SDA Resource Library, which will be available to any students and an Accessible Transportation Project.  Advocacy has continued for accessibility improvements at WWU and in Bellingham.  Please check out our web site, http://www.wwusda.org, for frequent updates on SDA’s activity.  We will also be starting this week to send out “SDA Weekly,” a weekly e-mail updating you on our progress.  If you are not on are e-mail list, you can send an e-mail to info@wwusda.org asking to be added to our mailing list.  Stay tuned for information on upcoming events, which will start in October!

One of SDA’s new goals this year is to build more community at Western.  To kick off this goal, I would like tell you a little bit about myself and then I would like to hear from you.  I am a sophomore at WWU and I have cerebral palsy.  I am the President and one of the co-founders of SDA, working directly with our members to coordinate disability advocacy on campus.  I have been involved in disability advocacy and awareness for the past five years at the local, state, and national levels.  I am interested in majoring in Business Management, but I am undecided.  I also work at the disAbility Resources for Students doing many tasks behind the scenes and providing technology support to students with disabilities.  You will find me running around campus on my electric scooter.  Stop me to say hi if I am not speeding too fast.

Now, that you know a little bit about me, I would like to know a little bit about you and your interests.  Feel free to shoot me an e-mail at info@wwusda.org and let me know a little about yourself, what you are majoring in, and what you like to do for fun.  I would also like to know if you have any ideas for SDA or any disability related issues on campus.  Brittany Otter, SDA’s Vice President or I will respond to your e-mail.  I look forward to learning more about you!

Have an awesome school year!

Sincerely,

Daman Wandke
